Horseshoe Golf Society

Horseshoe Golf Society

Once again last year was a successful year for the members and guests of the Horseshoe Golf society with days out to the Forest of Dean , Sapey in Worcestershire and Bristol.

About 12 year’s ago golfers from the villages of Arlingham, Fretherne, Framilode, Saul and Frampton -on Severn, all within the horseshoe bend of the river Severn, formed the Horseshoe Golf society. The objective of the society is to hold three golf days each year where golfers of all abilities can meet and enjoy golfing competition, good company and friendly banter accompanied by a pleasant evening meal and prize giving. These golf days are held in spring, summer and autumn and the aim is to visit two courses within the county and one slightly further afield. The choice of venue is left with the captain of the year and whilst the society looks for interesting courses the emphasis is on enjoyment rather than too tough a golfing challenge. Occasionally the British climate can intervene to toughen up even the most benign of courses, but that’s all in a day’s golf.

Over the past 12 seasons the society has played on most of the courses in Gloucestershire and many of the members have their favourites which have been visited more than once. The society has also played many course in the adjoining counties of Wiltshire, Avon and Herefordshire. In 2006, to mark the society’s tenth anniversary, a short but extremely enjoyable tour was organised to Bordeaux in Western France.

The golf days follow the format of breakfast rolls (bacon / sausage) and coffee on arrival at the course and the draw for partners in the morning  9-hole team competition. It’s then back to the club house for lunch and the draw for starting times for the afternoon 18-hole individual competition. All competitions are played off the golfer’s society-adjusted handicap. This is based on any club handicap or, in the absence of such, the individuals own ability and is adjusted following previous performances.

At the end of the golfing activities members change into casual dress and meet in the clubhouse for pre-dinner drinks. The day concludes with a two-course dinner after which the captain presents prizes to the successful golfers. A typical society day will cost in the region of £50:00 per golfer.

The society welcomes golfers of all abilities and encourages them to invite guests from anywhere outside the horseshoe area.

Any golfer wishing to join the society is invited to contact the secretary, Dave Merrett, at E C Merrett in Frampton 01452 740472 (office hours).
